Specification Workflow Timeline

A practical sequence from takeoff to inspection so purchasing desks and building inspectors share one data trail.

Step 1

Opening schedule

Capture lineal footage, stair rise/run, and whether the edge is indoor, deck, or coastal exposure.

Step 2

Cable & post

Select 1/8 in or 3/16 in cable, post spacing, and fitting type. Flag wind load rating needs on elevated decks early.

Step 3

Stair check

Verify floating stair stringer spans and tread materials against structural notes before drywall closes landings.

Step 4

Finish lock

Choose powder-coat or 316 stainless and record batch notes so multifamily floors stay visually consistent.

Step 5

Submittal

Package ASTM references, warranty years, and load bearing capacity notes into the Division 05 binder.

Fire resistance rating for surrounding wall assemblies remains a project responsibility; metal railing systems coordinate with the rated construction around them. Service life expectancy on listed assemblies is backed by a 25-year limited structural warranty when installed per Viewrail instructions.

Platform Metrics That Show Up on Takeoffs

1/8–3/16"

Cable diameter band

Most residential and light commercial Viewrail runs use these two diameters. Larger cable improves stiffness; smaller cable keeps sightlines quieter.

3.5–5 ft

Typical post spacing

Spacing depends on cable size, guard height, and whether the edge is indoor or deck-exposed. Confirm with the SKU sheet before framing posts.

4" sphere

Opening intent

Assemblies are configured so a four-inch sphere cannot pass between cables—verify local amendments for stair and balcony applications.

316 / PC

Finish codes

316 stainless for coastal; powder coat for inland decks. Recycled content percentage for metal can be supplied for LEED packages on request.

25 yr

Warranty period

Limited structural warranty on listed assemblies when tension and fastening follow published Viewrail instructions.

ISO 9001

Quality pathway

Lot tracking for fittings and weldments keeps dimensional stability consistent across multifamily floor releases.

Who Uses These Tables

Specification writers

Pull cable, spacing, and finish rows into Division 05 language without rewriting manufacturer PDFs by hand.

General contractors

Confirm post embeds and stair openings before drywall so inspections do not bounce the railing install.

Stair fabricators

Align floating stair stringer spans with Viewrail guard hardware so field drilling does not invent new hole patterns.

Distributors

Quote kits with filterable SKUs and downloadable sheets so dealers answer finish questions without a callback loop.
